Patent Vinyl Upholstery Ideas

Posted by Slabs On December - 17 - 2012

Patent vinyl gives off a nice sheen that allows the fabric to make an item stand out. This is why it is used for shoes, handbags, leggings, and skirts. It draws the attention toward that item. Patent vinyl is used in replace of genuine leather not only because it is more animal friendly, but also because it is so versatile.patent vinyl fabric.

The same concept that designers are going for with using patent vinyl for clothing can be used in home and office decorating. The look of the vinyl will draw the eye towards that item and that section of the room.

Other decoration options can be created with vinyl bedding, sofas, place mats, shower curtains, pillows, and a lot more. Because patent vinyl is so versatile, it can be turned in to any object you desire.

An upholstered patent vinyl sofa creates a great key piece for a room. Since it is such a large piece of furniture, the sofa is typically the first thing you notice when you walk in to a living room or office. Therefore, you want it to be a strong piece that does not have to be hidden behind blankets or pillows, even though those add a nice touch.
If you already have a great couch or you don’t want a vinyl one, an accent chair in vinyl is another great direction to go. Vinyl comes in a broad range of colors which means you could have a neutral colored couch and a vibrant chair to contrast it.

Patent vinyl can be incorporated in the bedroom as well with a covered headboard or used to make decorative pillows on the bed. In the kitchen, vinyl can be used as easy-to-clean placemats. The bathroom can also be decorated with vinyl in the form of a shower curtain.

Vinyl can be used to be accent pieces in the home like pillows and curtains or it can be used to be the spotlight piece like a couch or armchair. Wherever you put it, vinyl can make a room unique and stylish.

How to Repair Vinyl Chair Video Review

Posted by Slabs On December - 3 - 2012

This vinyl chair repair video opens with a nice shot of the outside of the shop.  It turns an ordinary how-to video on YouTube in to something similar to what you might see on TV.  The next shot sequence in the video gets right to it with a close up of the damaged chair cushion being taken apart.  There isn’t much of an introduction.

The video does a great job of having close ups when needed and having a clear view of what steps are being taken.  The close ups of the work being done on the imitation leather fabric are great.  It is easy to see what is going on and you get a clear idea of what to do.  However, there is not much talking; it almost seems as if the man is talking to himself and not to the viewer.  There are a lot of how-to videos that don’t have talking in them, but usually, when there is no talking done by the instructor, there is some other form of instruction to make sure the viewer gets what is going on.  The video is great for a visual learner, but there could be more verbal instruction on how to upholster the cushion.   If the person did not want to talk in the video, a slide in between shots could be added with written instruction on what to do to repair the damaged chair cushion.

It’s also great that there is music in the background, but it might have been better if it was added to the video afterwards so that it was a little clearer to hear for those watching the video to enjoy it, too.

The slide with the website name at the end was a nice finish to the video.  Overall, it was a strong how-to video but it would be helpful for either written or verbal instruction as well.

When it comes to durable, versatile material for upholstery, patent vinyl and plastic fabric offer furniture designers and hobbyists a host of possibilities.  Patent vinyl and plastic fabric can be fabricated in any color or pattern, as well in a large variety of textures, and are one of the most affordable and widely available upholstery materials on the marketplace today.

Unlike wool, nylon and other materials, patent vinyl and plastic fabric rarely cause an allergic reaction, making them some of the best upholstery materials for medical and educational facilities, as well as households in which one or more family members suffers from allergies.  In addition, they are extremely easy to clean, making patent vinyl and plastic fabric attractive upholstery options for bar and restaurant furniture, and furniture for public places such as airports and government buildings.  In addition, patent vinyl is often used in the form of faux leather as an animal-friendly option that still provides the look and feel of real leather.

Vinyl fabric used for bar stools and chairs.Patent vinyl is extremely well suited for restaurant booths and bar furniture, as it strongly resembles leather and offers the same strength and durability without the extensive upkeep leather requires.  Many restaurants and bars opt for the classic red we all associate with a traditional Mom & Pop’s diner.  A classic red with bold stitching offers a comfortable yet bold look for a restaurant booth, and the thickness of the patent vinyl allows for firm seat bolstering.

Bar stools in the same color offer the same feeling of comfort and stability, and form a visual invitation to customers to pull up at the bar and order something good.  For a more modern look, a lighter color such as a lime green, with more delicate stitching, offers a light hearted atmosphere for a cocktail bar or lunch room.  One of the main advantages to patent vinyl and plastic fabric is that one color can easily be combined with another, so it’s simple to create patterns for a unique and fun look.  Create stripes or diamond forms for chair seats and backs, and combine them with a chrome frame and table for a truly elegant look.

Patent vinyl and plastic fabric is also a favorite material for retro furniture.  The fifties were all about crazy colors, smooth curves and elegant design.  Iconic designs of the time have lost none of their appeal to today’s public, and both original 50s designs as well as reproductions can be seen in many homes, cafes, salons and stores today.

If you need to re-upholster original designs, you can order patent vinyl or plastic fabric in the same color, or choose another color for a different look.  Always remember to consult with your upholsterer before you choose a material and a color, to ensure the best possible results, as well as to maintain the value of original retro pieces.

The use of patent vinyl and plastic fabric in modern design and interior decorating has reached true creative heights in the past decades.  Furniture designers and interior decorators looking to combine both form and function with hypo-allergenic and durable materials have adopted patent vinyl and plastic fabric as one of the staples of their toolkits.  From ottomans and armchairs to children’s furniture and shower curtains, practically every piece of furniture is available in an innovative design that is both durable and affordable.

No matter whether you’re a hobbyist looking to restore a favorite chair, or a professional designer in search of the perfect material for a new design, patent vinyl and plastic fabric come in a wide range of textures and a rainbow of colors that can complement any interior while giving it a fresh, clean look.

Gothic black vinyl

Posted by Slabs On March - 26 - 2010

Lately every individual you meet on the street just loves the color black, even on their nails.  Incorporating a black color theme in homes is a growing trend and something you may be interested in for yourself.

If you look up the word Goth in the dictionary it gives the following definition: a style of rock and punk with a mash up of the colors white, silver and black plus metal accessories.  Black is a versatile piece that goes with virtually any color and makes any room elegant.  Simply mix it up with music and metal and you get Goth. This theme is perfect for your teen’s room, a basement bar, music room, or even in your own living room if that’s your style.

So what fabrics and upholstery give off the feel of Goth? A simple black leather couch with metal embellishments could scream Goth but it doesn’t just end with the furniture. A complete décor includes the rug, window embellishments, floor, walls up to the smallest details such as the lamp, lamp shade, vase and even the ash tray.

Incorporate Goth decor in a bar and use lighting that elicits a rock and roll stage – think spotlights and colored bulbs.  Get posters of your favorite band and try to mix it up with a touch of elegance, such as black mixed with silver rather than white. The possibilities are endless.

Black leather is another great choice for Goth inspired upholstery and offers resistance to spills and stains and some can even be sunlight resistant. The same pointers apply to home decor when purchasing new items or updating the look of a room. It would be inappropriate if you placed a Gothic-looking couch in a preppy inspired pink and blue pastel colored room which is why it is important to stick to one theme in designing or updating a room.

As mentioned, black doesn’t have to be the sole color of the decoration used.  The colors may range from silver to white to gray as long as the colors blend, match, and mesh well with the color black to give the correct feel.

For those of you who wish to be different or are already different in the way you dress, speak or act, then try making even your home unique and quite different than the rest.  Your house gives detailed information about the person living in it.  Gothic inspired looks for a house scream out the characteristics of a person who wishes to be different but makes sure that their styles still speak classic and elegance.

Are you looking to update your home? One way to freshen the look of your home is by simply updating the fabric your furniture is covered in. Nowadays everyone wants to save money and the most inexpensive way to go is by doing it yourself. Vinyl adds a look of freshness and easily updates that boring couch.

Vinyl can totally transform the image of an old couch and freshen the look by giving it a shiny and glossy finish. In terms of function, vinyl is quite durable as a fabric used for upholstery since it is spill and stain resistant.

Unlike ordinary fabric used on ordinary sofas, vinyl does not absorb water which makes it great for upholstery especially if you have kids in the house who are prone to spilling. Vinyl does not fade easily like other fabrics when exposed to sunlight. If it happens that it does fade, simply buff it up and it will go back to its lively gloss finish.

Vinyl, also know as PVC, is glossy and non porous plus it is quite flexible providing for a range of uses which is why it is not only found in fabric upholstery but on table tops as well.

It is easily managed and does not need much maintenance when it comes to cleaning. Unlike ordinary fabric which you need to wash and rotate in cleanings, vinyl only needs buffing once in a month for it to get back its shine or glossy finish.

PVC has a lot of color choices to choose from. From an elegant black or pure white, there are a ton of options to select from to create a totally new look for your sofa or upholstery without having to spend much money.
